What is investing? Investing is about building wealth, but it isn't just for the rich. Anyone can start investing, beginning with a very small amount and updating their portfolio regularly over time. People often think investing and gambling are similar, but they are very different. The difference is the time it takes. Investing is not about getting rich quickly.

What Is Investing?

Investing is the act of putting money and capital to work to earn additional income or profit. Legendary investor Warren Buffett defines investing as "the process of laying out money now to receive more money in the future." In other words, the goal of investing is to manage your funds in the hope that your money will grow over time.

Investing is also about "working smarter, not harder." Most of us work hard for a company or for our own business. We spend long hours working, and that comes with sacrifices. Investing part of your hard-earned money for the future is one way to make the most of those funds.

Investing is also about prioritizing your money. Spending brings instant gratification. Wearing new clothes, going on vacation to an exotic destination, or having dinner at a fancy restaurant all make life more enjoyable. Investing, however, puts the future ahead of these present desires.

Investing means letting your money work for you while you go about your busy life. That way, you can reap the rewards of this work in the future. Investing is about working toward a happier ending. Investing isn't easy. But it can be very rewarding for those who put in the effort.

Understanding Investing

You can start investing by putting money into stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, or real estate, or by starting your own business. However, every investment has its pros and cons. We'll look at these step by step. Before that, it's important to understand what types of investments there are and how they work. For example, before investing in a mutual fund, you need to know what it invests in, who manages the fund, and what the fees and expenses are.

There's no guarantee that everyone will make money through investing. But you can try to invest more successfully. We've just learned what investing is and why we should do it. Now let's look at "compound interest." It's one of the amazing miracles that investing can bring.
